Here's a quote (my translation) from the Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten. It speaks to the point of design vs. technological performance. The economics fortunes of Nokia and Ericsson, despite the recent telecoms disasters, bear the young lady out.

"12 year-old Andrea Ringblom was bored at the 1998 Ericsson annual meeting. Impulsively, she asked for the floor and started lambasting Ericsson management. "You should focus more on design. Nokia's phones are much cooler," trumpeted the precocious young lady. Now she thinks that if Ericsson had listened to her, the company might have avoided its current crisis. Even though Ericsson has hired a manager of design, the 14-year-old is not satisfied.
"The games are really boring," she told Dagens Industri, a Swedish business paper. Even though Ringblom has five shares in Ericsson, she chose a Nokia when recently buying a mobile phone.
"The Nokia phone has the best games, lots of ring tones, and no antenna that gets in the way," said the junior high school student, who also appreciates the Nokia phone's changeable covers - she prefers pink. She also preferred Motorola's model 3610 to the Ericsson phones. Her advice to Ericsson's new design manager is to find a distinct style and not imitate Nokia.
