Mr. Baar seems to spend paragraphs avoiding the obvious -- he has
implemented a magnifying glass for computer desktops.

I realize it is extremely unfashionable to mention the horrifying word
"text" in this crowd. Fascinated as they are with all sorts of new math for
graphics, the simple textual basis of our daily work is constantly being
shoved aside by companies producing such gimmicks.

How about reclaiming the keyboard instead? Could we please have a keyboard
for speed typists, such as the IBM Displaywriter and Selectric? Could we
please have keyboards designed by engineers from a culture which actually
uses the Latin alphabet? Could someone as bright as Mr. Baar please read the
old IBM papers on the correct angle of a keyboard, the need for tactile
feeback all the way through the keystroke?

Surely graphical gimmickry has reached sufficient heights to indicate that
this portion of the industry is now mature, and let's move on. How about
putting this kind of R&D effort into text-based interfaces?
