New York, NY, August 16, 2006 - In a new survey of the world's most highly cited, peer-reviewed technology publications, several of ACM's journals ranked first or second in their respective computing disciplines. In addition, Communications of the ACM had the third highest citation count across four key computing categories: Software Engineering, Information Systems, Hardware and Architecture, and Theory and Methods. The 2005 Journal Citations Reports, published by Thomson Scientific and released in June 2006, present statistical data that provides a systematic, objective way to evaluate the world's leading journals and their influence in the global research community.
In the Software Engineering field, two publications - ACM Transactions on Graphics and ACM Transaction on Software Engineering and Methodology - were ranked first and second, respectively. ACM Transactions on Information Systems achieved second place in the Information Systems category. In the Theory and Methods field, ACM Computing Surveys was the top-rated journal.
"These impressive rankings reflect the high standards that distinguish ACM's scholarly journals in the computing field," said Stuart Feldman, president of ACM. "ACM's journals provide original research and firsthand perspectives from the world's leading thinkers which is critical for the
technical community to sustain innovation and advances in information technology."
The ratings were issued by Thomson Scientific's Institute for Scientific Information (ISI). They measure an "impact factor," defined as the frequency with which the average article in a journal has been cited in a particular year. The ISI Impact Factor rating for 2005 is a ratio between the number of citations in 2005 in a given journal and the journal's total citations for 2003 and 2004.
